What do all of the greatest and most profitable websites on the internet have in common?

They all have a great domain name to market.  Think about it.  Dell, Google, Yahoo, Hotjobs, Amazon and the list goes on.  Selecting your domain name, or group of names is the first step to online success and becoming a profit king.

There are billions of domain names out there.  Many great domains have been taken in the .com and .net areas, but that doesn't mean there aren't billions more names just waiting to be found and for you to stake your claim.  This ecourse is going to show you step by step how to select a great domain name, or multiple names (at $8.75 at http://domaindjinn.com for a .com or .net, you can't go wrong!).  Later lessons we will walk you through selecting great products to sell, planning a business, creating web sites, using templates, marketing successfully on the web, and much more.  We will arm you with the knowledge.  Are you ready to become a success?

What is a domain name?

Without getting too technical, a domain name is merely an easy to remember word or phrase for web surfers so that they can find your site on the internet easily.  All domain names resolve to a number.  This means that a domain is just a pretty marketing face for an ugly set of 4 numbers separated by periods.  This number is called an IP address and is similar to the Zip code and postal address of your local post office, but uglier.  Can you recognize these websites' IP addresses?

66.94.234.13
72.14.207.99
143.166.224.178

I wouldn't blame you if you had no idea that the first number was Yahoo.com, the second was Google.com and the third was Dell.com!!  But it is true!!!  Don't believe me?  Ok, then do this.  Go to your favorite browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape and type in one of those IP addresses above.  Press Go.  You will go straight to Yahoo, Google or Dell.  The reason is because the Domain Name is linked to an IP address.  In technospeak we say a Domain name resolves to an IP address.

What is IP?  IP stands for Internet Protocol.  It is just a geeky way of saying it is Language of the Internet.  Just like in any language, the Internet language has a protocol that it follows in order to communicate effectively between computers.  Take a typical phone conversation you may have:

"Hi"
"Hello"
"How may I Help you?"

Do you see the Protocol there?  You see, there are always rules people follow when communicating.  First you say Hello to announce that you are on the phone and are actually on the other line.  The other person responds with a similar hello to suggest that they too are on the line and are waiting for conversation.

If you type in a domain name such as Dell.com into your browser, your request goes to a central server on the internet.  There are 12 such central servers.  These servers tell your browser that Dell.com = 143.166.224.178  and then you are redirected (resolves to) that IP address.  At the end of the IP address is a Web Server which then communicates with your pc.  The two pc's basically say, hello I am ready to download my website to you, hello I am ready to receive your download,  and then proceeds to download the web page to your pc so you can view it in your browser.  If you notice, your browser keeps these websites stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder on your Windows pc.  This storage allows you to see the content more quickly the next time you come back to that page, since it doesn't need to download it again.

So you see a domain name is really not much other than a word or phrase that is associated with all the stuff that happens in the background by your web host, the central internet servers, and your browser.  The domain name does nothing.  It is merely the pretty face that gets all the credit, but in fact you could browse the internet without domain names entirely.  You just have to remember a lot more IP addresses.

Obviously I am kidding about trying to browse the internet without domain names.  Although it is possible and domains can be eliminated in theory, it is only because of domain names that surfing the internet is so easy and enjoyable.  It would be an absolute chore to find something if you had to depend on remembering IP addresses.  Why do you think 1-800 numbers have to repeat themselves on radio ads several times?  Most businesses come up with some easy to remember number like 1-800-Go-Taxis or something like that because humans can't remember numbers easily.  I simply wait for a domain name on commercials before I write it down.  I won't write down a phone number again.  It is easier for me to remember a domain name, go to the site and find the contact number than it is to write down a 10 digit number.  And the Internet IP number can be up to 12 digits!!!  That is even worse!!  You can see why Domain names have become vital to the web.

What constitutes a good name?

After analyzing thousands of domains, I have decided that there are a few rules to follow:

1.  Try to make a name as short as possible.

Google.com is a great name because it is only 2 syllables Goo - Gle.  Whenever possible, try to keep your domain name short.  Ideally 1-3 syllables is the best.  4 syllables at the most.  At least your main domain name should follow this rule.  You may consider supplementary domain names such as Cheap-Domain-Names-On-Sale.com to target search engines.  But nobody will be able to remember that.  I personally chose http://DomainDjinn.com  because it was 3 syllables, and I always thought that this web stuff is magical.  A djinn is a kick-butt Genie that can do amazing things.  And at 3 syllables, the name is easier to remember than the phrase Cheap-Domain-Names-On-Sale.com.

2. Try to get a .com name first.  Then look at .net .biz .tv and others.

Nearly everybody will automatically put in .com after your name.  Even if you repeat your name a thousand times to them if it has a .net .biz or .tv extension.  .Com has become the standard.  Always try to build your business around a .com and snatch it before others do.

3. Try to go for a very unique name, something that is memorable but unique.

Here is really where you need to put your thinking cap on.  You don't have to become a marketing guru. Just think what would sound good and is marketable.  Notice we are not claiming SearchEngine.com as the #1 website on the planet.  It is Google, or Yahoo or Dogpile or Altavista or Askjeeves.  Why?  They are Unique!!!  They are memorable.  They aren't descriptive, but people automatically associate Googling with web searching.  It is the same thing as Kleenex being associated with bathroom tissue.  You are looking for creating Brand loyalty with your domain name, not just a bland description of the type of service you perform or goods you sell.  Obviously, Diamonds.com would have a bit of an advantage on you if you were a diamond marketer.  But in the end, Tiffany.com would create a more memorable experience.  Why?  The thing is that Diamonds describes a hard crystalized rock.  Tiffany implies high luxury, creative, beauty and other things.  Sure they may sell diamonds, but they sell much more and can command a far higher price.

4. When you find a winner, get misspellings of your domain name, .net .biz .tv and others.

You still want to snatch up the .net and others so that others don't steal away future customers of yours.  For example: McDonalds.com will want to own every extension out there McDonalds.net McDonalds.Biz McDonalds.TV and others like McDonaldsWeb.Com, McDonaldsOnline.com, McDonaldsNews.com etc...  Remember the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall?  The business owner had tried to capitalize on a misspelling of McDonalds by calling his McDougals.  He even copied the golden arches and sold hamburgers.  Don't let your competition confuse your rightful clients!

Listen, years ago you would have to pay 45 bucks to own a domain name, and you had to pay through the nose for hosting of each and every domain name.  Now with http://domaindjinn.com you can get a .com or .net domain for $8.75 a year and it includes domain forwarding and masking.  That means you don't need to have a web host for every domain name.  You can have 500 domain names and they can all point (be forwarded) to one Web host (one IP address).  This can save thousands per year in hosting.  I will talk more about this in future lessons.  But for now, you should know you can get 10 domains for under $90.  Think about it.  If you owned a physical store, you would have to pay thousands in franchise fees, thousands for utilities, rent, staff etc.  Having an online web presence is like creating a business for next to nothing.  Creating 1 brick and mortar business can bankrupt most people quickly.  Creating 500 online businesses can be done quickly, easily on almost any budget.

Online businesses can be way more profitable than brick and mortar stores.  Compare Gateway with Dell.  Gateway chose the brick and mortar approach to selling computers and opened up thousands of Gateway country stores across the country.  Remember the Cow boxes?  But Dell chose the online approach.  Dell surpassed everybody, including the #1 computer seller Compaq.  Gateway conceded defeat and closed all their stores and began to promote their online presence.  This stuff works!!!

The web is the business equalizer.  Remember the old days?  The rich became richer.  Why?  Because they had the financial backing to create new businesses and the know how to make them successful.  The internet changes all that.  I will empower you with the knowledge for free.  The costs are so cheap to start your own business that anybody can have a business and be successful.  For the cost of a dinner you could have a domain, a web host and product to sell.  And you don't have to pay contractors to build your store, pay franchisers for the right to market their product or get into deep financial trouble to do it.  It doesn't matter if you drive a taxi or command a high powered law firm.  The web is the wild west of opportunity.  Are you ready to stake your claim?
